The Mental Skills Program consists of seven sessions. Each session deals with a distinct topic. The sessions are designed to be completed in sequence because they build upon each other.
A systematic approach to acting and thinking in purposeful ways to achieve specific accomplishments.
Athletes will create a road map for themselves to get to where they want to go. Athletes will begin by identifying their WHY - their reason for playing soccer. From there, athletes will systematically identify their unique milestone goal, challenge goals, focus goals, and goal achievement strategies.
Using all the senses to create or recreate an experience in the mind.
Athletes will learn the scientific evidence supporting the use of imagery and gain real-life experience using imagery themselves. Athletes will create their own individualized imagery script and create a systematic imagery usage schedule for training and games that they can chart.
Purposeful, Positive, and Possibility Thinking
Athletes will learn how to stop thinking randomly, and how to begin to think purposefully.Athletes will go through different common scenarios in games and come up with an action-plan for what they will think about in those situations. Athletes will learn about the power of positive thinking and learn how to use cues to flip the switch from negative to positive. Athletes will gain insight on the power of turning limitations into opportunities with possibility thinking.
Willfully controlling bodily functions such as muscular tension, breathing, and heart rate to induce a relaxed state.
Athletes will learn about and gain first-hand experience using power breathing and muscle relaxation techniques. Athletes will identify moments to use these techniques and make an individualized plan to use physical relaxation techniques during training and games.
Mental Processing that involves conscious attention and awareness of what you are doing when you are playing soccer.
Athletes will complete a questionnaire to gain insight on their ability to focus through distractions, refocus, zoom, play on autopilot and more. Athletes will learn hot to use specific techniques such as vocal cues to refocus and get back in the game.
Managing physical and mental readiness for optimal performance.
Athletes will complete their own personal optimal energy profile. Athletes will learn how to purposefully get themselves in the emotional state in which they are best suited to play in. Athletes will learn how to manage their energy so that they don't blow it all in the warm-up or the first 10 minutes of a game.
Enhance beliefs or degree of certainty athletes possess about their ability to be successful.
Athletes will learn why self confidence is the mental modifier by which thoughts and beliefs are demonstrated through actions. Athletes will learn specific techniques that they can use to keep their self confidence high.
